Looking forward to Clash of Heroes HD from Capybara Games
One of the first games I saw on the show floor at PAX East was an upcoming XBLA/PSN game, developed by Toronto-based Capybara Games, that continues the long running Might & Magic series called Clash of Heroes HD. This new downloadable games takes a queue from the ever popular Puzzle Quest titles to present a captivating puzzle/strategy based RPG. Where Puzzle Quest presented a Bejeweled style game as a means to battling your foes, Clash of Heroes HD provides a unique style of strategy in this place. Borrowing elements from many different strategy games as well as trading card games, Capybara has crafted a wholly original and challenging game that will prove many hours of engaging gameplay.
As a port of the DS game of the same name, awarded the IGN Strategy Game of the Year award in 2009, the main story takes place on a node-based board, but the real action unfolds on the battlefield where you and your army of creatures attempt to break through the enemy creatures and do damage to the enemy’s end zone. The strategy elements come in the form of building up your army off the battle field along the same lines as building a TCG deck. On the field, moving units around the board and matching them up to like-kinded units will trigger the unit’s attack movement, doing damage to the enemy. I won’t even attempt to explain all the intricacies of this game as the above description truly doesn’t do enough justice to this brilliant game; it really must be played to understand and enjoy it.
Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes HD commits to boast a single player story lasting around 18 hours even without including the many side quests that will be available. In addition to a huge single player campaign, Capybara has included a multiplayer option which provides one-on-one and two-on-two battles. For an XBLA/PSN game, Clash of Heroes is promising to provide a huge game worthy of spending many hours with. As a fan of strategy game, I am personally excited for this game to arrive, published by Ubisoft, sometime in April. This is going to prove to be the perfect game to play when time is limited, as battles can last anywhere from 2 to 60 minutes.
I would highly recommend Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes HD to anyone who enjoys a great fantasy adventure and the challenge of superb strategy play.
