Lasting First Impressions of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 from Activision

CODMW3_x360PFT_frontDoes a Call of Duty game these days really need anyone to tell you whether it’s good or not?  I mean, if absolutely no one reviewed this series of games, it would still sell millions upon millions of copies.  It’s a juggernaut title that shows no sign of slowing down.  Activision has even recently opened the doors to an online social network dedicated to players of the Call of Duty franchise, Call of Duty Elite, though at the time of this writing, they were still having issues (I can’t create an account, for example) with this online portal.  Regardless, when Activision sent me a copy of COD:MW3 for review, I was excited to give it a try.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 picks up where the second in the series left off and it definitely starts with a bang!  This is one hectic nonstop action game that just keeps on upping the ante.  I have to say that my first hour of playing the game went by so fast, I couldn’t believe it was an hour already.  I managed to get through the first section of the game in that hour and I had an absolute blast playing it.  I played the game on normal difficulty since I’m not a professional FPS player by any means and it gave me a good enough challenge to experience the game.  And quite an experience it was.

The game starts off with a run through a devastated and besieged downtown New York and the the atmosphere feels very real.  The sound in this game is astonishing and truly immerses the player in the surroundings.  What I really liked about this game, and I felt it differs from other FPS games, is the seemingly unending waves of enemies.  Simply put, if you don’t continue to move forward from one objective to the next, the enemies seem to never stop coming.  You must fight the enemies back all the while pushing forward with your objectives.

Another great feature in Modern Warfare 3 is the constant variety of gameplay that is thrown at you as you play.  In the first section of the game alone, I ran through the streets of New York defending myself from the oncoming terrorists, jumped into a helicopter and used heavy artillery to take down other helicopters, drove an underwater diving propulsion vehicle, infiltrated an enemy submarine, and escaped on a speedboat in the midst of devastation all around.  It was an incredible thrill ride that just never stopped.  And all this happened in the first hour alone!

My wife was sitting beside me as I was playing and she was enjoying watching the game as much as I enjoyed playing it.  It truly felt like we were right in the middle of a fantastic summer blockbuster action movie and it was a sheer thrill.  Modern Warfare 3 is just a beautiful game to play and watch. The graphics of the game and the atmosphere is so brilliantly creates feel so real and so incredibly immersive.  I couldn’t help but appreciate the authenticity of this seemingly war-torn city that could very well be my own.

Modern Warfare has returned with more intense battle sequences the likes of which you have yet to experience.  It will take you for an all consuming thrill ride and never let you go.

Activision, I gave you an hour and I am IMPRESSED.  But you had no doubt of that, did you?
